We're a small Aussie fundraising business, and we're always keen to meet friendly, honest people who'd like to join the team.

Who we are

Blackboat started in 2018 and has been fundraising for charities since 2020. We sign up regular monthly donors, face to face, for much-loved Aussie charities, at street sites, shopping centres and events. Opportunities come up in different places at different times, so tell us where you're based when you apply.

Our director, Matt Perrin, was named PFRA Fundraiser of the Year for 2023. We work to PFRA standards, and we care about doing this properly: honest conversations, no pressure, and donors who still feel good about their decision a year later.

Who we're looking for

• Warm, honest people who are comfortable talking with members of the public
• People who'd rather be paid for results than for hours, and who like running their own week
• Career changers, people after part-week work, and experienced fundraisers who are over the hype
• People who care about doing good, honestly

Your life and work experience count here, whatever your background. You don't need fundraising experience.

What the job is

You set up at a charity stand at street sites, shopping centres and events, and travel to other areas if and when you want to. You talk with people about causes many of them already care about. Plenty of people are glad you stopped, and some will choose to become regular monthly donors. You do it honestly and without pressure.

What you get

• You choose your days, your hours on site and which sites you book
• The charity and compliance training the charities require before your first day, including the PFRA modules, plus our own online training
• Optional mentoring from an experienced fundraiser, in the field with you if you'd like it
• A direct line to the owner when you want it
• Room to grow your own business with us over time

What to expect

1. Apply. Fill in the short form below and attach your CV.
2. A phone chat. A relaxed chat with one of our team. You can ask us anything.
3. Come and watch. Before you start, you spend time at a stand watching an experienced fundraiser at work. It's watch only. You won't be fundraising. It's a chance for you, and us, to see if it's a good fit.
4. Getting set up. If we both want to go ahead, we'll walk you through the rest: your ABN, the charity registration, the PFRA modules and your charity ID badge, then your first days.

This is independent contractor work, not a job with a wage. It's commission-based: you're paid only for the donors you sign up.

• There's no hourly rate, no base pay and no guaranteed income.
• You run your own small business. You need an ABN (it's free and quick to get), and you look after your own tax and super.
• You set your own availability, and you can take time off whenever it suits you.
• Your exact rates, and everything that affects how and when you're paid, including cancelled pledges, are given to you in writing before you start.

If you need a guaranteed weekly wage right now, this isn't the right fit, and that's completely fine.

What you earn is up to you

We won't dress it up: there's no wage here. You're paid for the donors you sign up, so your results reflect the effort, skill and consistency you bring. Get good at the conversation, show up, keep improving, and your results follow. You're in control of your week, your sites and how much you put in, and you're rewarded for what you bring.

We can't predict what any one person will earn, and we won't promise a figure. Some people find their feet quickly, some take longer, and some find it isn't for them.

Work rights

You need the right to work in Australia. If you're on a visa, we'll check your work rights, including any limits on hours or type of work, before you start.

Do I get paid a wage?

No. This is contractor work, paid per donor you sign up. There's no hourly rate, no base pay and no guaranteed income. If you need a steady weekly wage, it won't suit you right now.

Can I really control what I earn?

Your results follow what you put in: how often you work, how good your conversations are and how consistent you are. That's the upside of being paid per donor. The flip side is that nothing is guaranteed, and we won't quote a figure. Your rates are agreed in writing before you start.

Do I need an ABN?

Yes, or be willing to get one. It's free and quick, and we'll point you in the right direction.

I'm on a visa. Can I apply?

You can apply. You need the right to work in Australia, and we check work rights, including any limits on hours, before anyone starts.

Do I need fundraising or sales experience?

No. Plenty of good fundraisers came from other fields. What matters is being friendly, honest and comfortable talking with strangers. Training is provided.

What does "come and watch" mean?

Before you start, you spend time at a stand watching an experienced fundraiser, so you can see what the work is really like. It's watch only: you won't be fundraising. We'll arrange it with you after the phone chat.
